Sleeping Bags from the Hex Valley: A South African heritage studio making premium quality down bags

Hex Valley Down has been quietly making some of South Africa’s most respected sleeping bags for decades. What began as a small family operation in the Western Cape has grown into a trusted name among hikers, climbers, and outdoor travellers who value reliable gear that lasts.

Today the brand is run by Annemien Ganzevoort, who took over the reins from her mother, Christine Jordaan, originally from Namibia and the founder of the Hex Valley Down studio — known then by its Afrikaans name Hexvalei Dons — who has been making sleeping bags, duvets, and pillows in the valley for decades. Annemien grew up surrounded by down, fabric rolls, and stories of long journeys into wild places. For her, the connection to the outdoors is simply the way life has always been.

She remembers childhood nights sleeping under vast African skies:

“I remember nights somewhere in the bush in Namibia…
snuggled like sardines on a big ground cover in our down sleeping bags.
Best of times ever. Memories burned into my mind.”

Those early experiences shaped a deep respect for good gear — the kind that quietly does its job night after night on the trail.

A Family Business Built Around the Outdoors

The sleeping bag range grew from a very practical need: from a family of hikers wanting reliable sleeping bags that worked in real mountain conditions.

Annemien’s father, a farmer, was already an experienced outdoor hiker and traveller. Even today, well into his seventies, he still heads out on demanding hikes. Recently he led his 50th descent of Groothoek Kloof, a rugged canyon route involving steep terrain and abseils.

That same love for exploration has always influenced the way Hex Valley Down designs its products. The sleeping bags are shaped by decades of real experience in the mountains and the bush.

A Small Studio in the Hex Valley

Hex Valley Down sleeping bags are made by hand in a workshop on a farm in the beautiful Hex Valley, a wine district of the Western Cape.

Inside the studio, skilled team members cut fabric, measure down, and stitch each sleeping bag individually to order. The team of seamstresses have developed highly specialised sewing skills over the years.

In a rural farming region where employment opportunities can be limited, the studio provides valuable jobs and practical skills training for the local community. For the people making the sleeping bags, this work supports families and helps sustain livelihoods in the valley.

The Down Inside the Sleeping Bags

Down remains one of nature’s most remarkable insulators. Its ability to trap warm air while remaining extremely light is why it continues to outperform many synthetic materials.

Hex Valley Down uses high-quality goose down that is harvested in a traditional, humane way.

The geese live as free-range flocks on small farms, not in confined or industrial conditions. When the down reaches full maturity, it naturally begins to loosen and moult. At this stage it can be gently collected without harming the birds or causing distress.

This age-old harvesting method respects both the animals and the quality of the down itself. Mature down clusters provide the loft and warmth that sleeping bags depend on.

What Does 850+ Fill Power Mean?

If you’ve looked at sleeping bag specifications, you’ve probably seen the term fill power.

Fill power measures how much space a given amount of down occupies when it lofts. In simple terms, it tells you how fluffy and insulating the down is.

Higher numbers mean higher quality down.

  • 600–700 fill power – good quality down, commonly used in mid-range bags

  • 750–800 fill power – high performance outdoor gear

  • 850+ fill power – premium down with exceptional warmth-to-weight performance

Hex Valley Down sleeping bags use 850+ fill power goose down, which means the insulation traps a large volume of warm air while remaining extremely lightweight and compressible.

For hikers and travellers, this translates to three important benefits:

  • Better warmth for the weight

  • Smaller packed size

  • Long-lasting loft when properly cared for

It’s one of the reasons down sleeping bags remain the gold standard for serious outdoor travel.

Designed for Different Ways of Travelling

Over the years Hex Valley Down has refined several sleeping bag shapes to suit different types of trips.

The Wide Mummy hits the sweet spot for most hikers: efficient warmth without feeling restrictive.
For those counting grams, a Slim Fit mummy keeps things lighter and closer to the body for weight-focused trips.
And if you prefer more room to stretch out, the Rectangular shape trades a little efficiency for extra comfort.

Fabric choices also allow some personal preference.

Customers can choose between:

  • CIRE ripstop nylon taffetta inside and out — an ultra-light performance fabric that is water resistant and packs down very small

  • CIRE outer with cotton inner — for those who enjoy the natural feel of cotton against the skin

The CIRE ripstop nylon shell keeps weight down while staying tough enough for repeated packing and trail use. It compresses easily in your pack and helps the down loft quickly when it’s time to turn in for the night.

The bags use 3D box-wall baffle construction, which keeps the down evenly distributed so it can loft fully and eliminate cold spots during a chilly night.

Because each sleeping bag is made to order, the down is measured and filled specifically for that bag rather than sitting compressed in a warehouse for months — helping it loft properly when it reaches you.

A Lifetime of Stories in Every Bag

Running a small farm-based manufacturing company has meant long days, road trips to agricultural shows, and plenty of learning along the way.

Annemien remembers travelling around South Africa with her mother when the business was still in its early days — balancing trade shows, family life, and the realities of running a small company.

“It’s been quite the rollercoaster. I’ve learnt a thousand lessons along the way.”

Through all of that, the focus has stayed the same: build quality products that people can trust.

Discover the Hex Valley Down Range

The Hex Valley Down collection is divided into several series designed for different conditions — from warm summer trips to colder mountain journeys. Here's a complete breakdown of all four series.

Each bag is made to order in South Africa, allowing hikers to choose their preferred fabric combination, size, colours, and zip placement. This is a rare and wonderful opportunity in an age of mass production.

Repairability

Quality down bags are built for the long haul. With proper care and occasional repairs, they can serve for many seasons on the trail.

Made for the trail: packed small, lofting fast at camp, and ready for many nights under the stars.
